Prematured giant sunflower

She thought she's a daisy !

The seed-packet says 'Golden Crown Sunflower, grows up to 2 metres tall'... but tis baby bloomed at 80 cm tall. And she barely even looks developed.

Will certainly make Attempt#2. Soon. Shall wait for sunny May/Jun/July.

Hi rummi,

I experienced the same thing as you with miniaturised sunflowers when I grew them in containers.

The causes I reckon could be chiefly due to the lack of long duration of direct sunshine, provided nutrients are already provided in sufficient amounts.

Another factor could be the size of the pot...

hi wilson,
thanks for sharing your experience:)

the sunflowers are grown in 40cm tall pots, so depth is less possible to be the cause.

will make attempt#2 once the 'lukewarm' weather passes... ...

There are a lot of reasons that you have a prematured giant sunflower according to my experiences. If you must have a really large pot up to your knee, a lot of fertilised soil with abundant compost, a lot of sunshine and watering a least twice a lot. I have grown five gaint sunflowers using this method.Their height is between 2 to 4 meters.

hi simon,
very encouraging to hear tat u had succeeded in the giant sunflowers.

these prematured-kids were grown in deep pots ->40cm deep...

i can imagine tat lack of sunshine could be the main reason since it was rainy/ overcasted sky during their growing period.

will make attempt number 2 in 2 weeks time ;)

I am sunflower lover,i really love this flower because of its size.I think its better if you put your sunflower in a garden than a pot.I never put it in a pot because it will grow as you expect.
